What the app records
Brink Debrief records audio from your phone’s microphone, a connected Bluetooth headset, or the speakerphone, and only when you start a recording. A recording continues in the background until you stop it. While it does, Android shows a persistent notification for as long as the recording runs, and iOS shows its own microphone indicator.
Where your data is processed
Transcription, speaker attribution, notes and summaries all run on your device. Speaker attribution only separates the audio into two groups, “Me” and “Them” (or “unknown”); it never identifies who anyone is.
Your audio, transcripts, notes and summaries are never uploaded. We have no servers that receive them.
- There is no account and no sign-in.
- There is no analytics and no advertising.
- There are no crash-reporting SDKs.
- There are no third-party SDKs that collect data.
How your data is stored
Everything the app keeps is stored on your device in an encrypted database (SQLCipher, 256-bit). The encryption key is held by the Android Keystore or the iOS Keychain, not stored alongside the data. On Android, app backup is disabled, so your conversations are not copied into device or cloud backups.
The only network use: model downloads
The app uses the internet for one thing: downloading the model files you choose to install, from models.brinkdebrief.com, an endpoint we operate on Cloudflare.
These requests carry no personal data. As with any web request, our hosting and content-delivery provider, Cloudflare, necessarily sees your IP address and standard request metadata (such as the time of the request and the file requested). We do not log or use this information beyond Cloudflare’s default operation of the service.
If you would rather the app never touch the network, you can import a model file yourself instead of downloading it, and the app will make no requests at all.
Sharing and export
You can export a conversation as Markdown through your phone’s system share sheet. This only happens when you tap Share, and where it goes is your choice. Once you share it, the app it goes to handles it under that app’s own terms.
Permissions and why we ask for them
On Android, the app asks for:
- Microphone — to record when you start a recording.
- Notifications — to show the notification that is visible while a recording runs.
- Bluetooth connect — to detect which audio route (for example, a Bluetooth headset) is live.
- Foreground service — to keep recording when the app is off-screen.
- Internet — for model downloads only.
On iOS, the app asks for microphone access, and Bluetooth access so it can use a connected headset as the microphone.
Recording other people
Laws on recording conversations vary by country and region, and some require everyone in the conversation to agree. You are responsible for getting consent from the people you record wherever local law requires it.
Deleting your data
You can delete any conversation in the app. Uninstalling the app deletes everything it stored. Because we hold no copy of your data, there is nothing for us to delete on request. See also Delete your data.
Children
Brink Debrief is not directed to children under 13.
